About Us
North East Housing Initiative, Inc., "NEHI", is a non-profit 501(c)(3) community land trust formed in 2014 dedicated to providing permanently affordable shared equity housing in North East Baltimore. It is an outgrowth of St. Anthony's Community Advocacy committee that expanded into a religiously, racially, and economically diverse group of North East Baltimore residents.
NEHI helped to launch and support the city-wide 20/20 campaign to finance permanently affordable housing and has educated state and city legislators about the social and fiscal, benefits and functions of community land trusts.
NEHI's goal is to transform vacant, abandoned, and foreclosed properties into permanently affordable homes for people with an AMI of 120% and below, while providing training and employment opportunities, leadership development, increasing economic self-sufficiency, lifting people out of poverty, thus building a community that is sustainable, inclusive and diverse.

Good Works
The North East Housing Initiative (NEHI) has carved a significant niche in addressing housing disparities in Baltimore, Maryland. Established in 2013, NEHI was founded as a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating affordable housing solutions to revitalize communities and uplift residents. It is rooted in the belief that stable housing is a crucial component of socioeconomic advancement and community health.
Baltimore, with its rich history and diverse neighborhoods, has long faced challenges of urban decay, poverty, and housing inequality. NEHI emerged in response to these issues, focused primarily on the North East sector of the city. From its inception, NEHI has worked tirelessly to transform vacant properties into livable, affordable homes for families who could otherwise not afford them.
NEHI's model is unique in its comprehensive approach, which includes rehabilitation of existing structures to preserve the architectural heritage of Baltimore while injecting new life into neighborhoods that had been previously neglected. The initiative works closely with local stakeholders, including government agencies, other nonprofits, and community members, ensuring that their projects reflect the needs and aspirations of those they serve.
One of the defining features of NEHI's approach is its commitment to inclusivity and resident empowerment. By providing affordable housing options, NEHI not only offers immediate relief but also works towards long-term social equity. They offer homeownership education and financial literacy programs to residents to help ensure sustainable living conditions and foster community pride.
With every rehabilitation project, NEHI aims to spark further economic development in the area, creating safer and more vibrant neighborhoods. As homes are revitalized, property values can stabilize, and new businesses are encouraged to open, providing jobs and services for local residents.
The North East Housing Initiative exemplifies how targeted, thoughtful efforts in housing can serve as a catalyst for broader urban renewal. As Baltimore continues to strive towards a future where every resident has access to affordable, dignified housing, NEHI remains a pivotal player in realizing that vision.
